A tandem skydive for Macmillan Cancer Support sparked my curiosity about the mind’s potential for healing and resilience. Soon after, I ran my first marathon for Breast Cancer Now and discovered Havening Techniques through Paul McKenna. Resolving a lifelong spider phobia in under 10 minutes was a pivotal moment—it revealed the power of these techniques to create rapid, profound change.

In 2024, I became a Certified Havening Techniques® Practitioner, an NLP® Practitioner (achieving Master Practitioner status in 2025), and a Certified Hypnotherapist. Since then, I’ve helped countless clients achieve remarkable results—from overcoming anxiety and trauma to finding clarity, motivation, and relief from physical symptoms like nausea and chest tightness. One client recovering from a serious fall described the changes as “immediate and life-changing."

How a traumatic or distressing memory is encoded

For a traumatic (or distressing) memory to become encoded by the brain, all four of the below components need to be present with the first step being something happens (an event).  Through the power of Havening, electrochemical changes are made to alleviate the emotional distress.  Importantly, it's fast, effective and there is no need to discuss.

Event

An event happens and all of the following components need to be present in terms of meaning (perceived as threat), landscape (vulnerable) and inescapability (unable to escape).

Meaning

The event is perceived as a threat.  Examples include physical injury, threat of injury or attack, hurt (physical or emotional), loss (of something we care about), abandonment, somatic pain, heights, being trapped, open spaces, predators, creepy crawlies to name but a few.

Landscape

The state of the brain at any given time and shapes meaning and perception. This includes; chronic inescapable stress (illness, disability, hormones, anxiety, pain, history of trauma/ abandonment) and acute inescapable stress (anticipatory stress, work, relationships, sleep).     

Inescapability

Perceived as unable to escape physically or emotionally. There is a conscious or unconscious sense of being trapped, out of control or no way to resolve.

What is Havening?

Havening is an innovative technique designed to help individuals get to a better place. Developed by Dr Ronald Ruden, Havening uses sensory input, to alter the brain's response to distressing memories or emotional triggers. This technique harnesses the power of human touch and the brain's neuroplasticity to promote wellbeing and resilience.

During a Havening session, the practitioner guides the client through specific touch patterns, such as gently stroking the arms, face, or hands. This process helps disrupt the pathways to the brain associated with a negative memory, effectively "de-linking" the emotional response from the memory itself. The result is a significant reduction in the emotional intensity of the memory, leading to a calmer, more balanced state of mind. Havening is known for it's rapid and lasting effects, offering a non-invasive, empowering method for emotional healing.
